Dvorak and Bruckner with Chailly and LGO
[Yeonhap News - EunKyu Choi]

Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Kapellmeister Ricardo Chailly made a great achievement. Chailly put liveliness into the orchestra which has imposing sound. LGO’s sound was bright and filled with rhythmic vitality. Interesting thing is that the performance of March 7th and 8th was successful in different meanings. On 7th, Dvorak’s familiar melody sounded fresh and on 8th, Bruckner’s difficult music sounded very familiar. Dvorak who had abounded melodic ideas, combined various themes in his work so it would be blurred easily in the ends of each movement. But Chailly and LGO expressed each theme of Dvorak’s 7th Symphony individually and showed the structure of this work clearly. In Dvorak’s Violin Concerto, 2nd movement, Leonidas Kavakos showed delicate changes of sound and unique shadow in his performing. Especially, the encore piece he played, Andante from 2nd violin sonata of Bach, showed loneliness and lead the audience to deep abyss.
Bruckner 8th symphony on 8th is not easy work to the orchestra as well as the audience. However in this concert, Bruckner’s 8the symphony was no longer hard to listen. If Bruckner said “Halleluiah! Finally I finished my 8th symphony!” after he finished his 8th symphony, the audience would say “Halleluiah! Finally now I can hear Bruckner.” In first movement which is filled with difficult harmony and unfamiliar sounds, the smooth transition between each theme was magical. In second movement, Scherzo, Chailly showed musical sense of humor by emphasizing interesting themes and exaggerating dynamics. The 3rd movement of 8th symphony, Cahilly and LGO drew huge crescendo for 30minutes. The sound was fantastic with 3harps following the 1890 Nowak edition. The inventive interpretation of Chailly and LGO made Bruckner’s symphony interesting and wonderful.

Seven Curtain Calls… ‘Fantastic Bruckner by LGO and Chailly’
[The Seoul Shinmun – TaeHyung Ryu]

Bruckner’s symphony no.8 of Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Ricardo Chailly was uncommon experience to audience. The audience can enjoy Bruckner’s music though they don’t have much knowledge about Bruckner’s music and they could walk through the woods of music. The sound of LGO was very unique. The seating position of the orchestra was different from normal positions. On the left side, behind of first violins, double bass made deep sound in the lower register. Based on it, string section was steady and woodwinds made unique sound. Brass also sounded loudly and strong. Kapellmeister Ricardo Chailly was a good natured person with a cheerful look. He was Italian as I expected. He conducted complicated passage very easily and his direction was not ambiguous at all. He put reasonable means into every themes of 8th symphony which has lots of repetition. In 3rd movement which seems endless, Chailly lead the orchestra without delay. However because of the phone bell, Chailly and the orchestra was wavered a little bit. The government should consider the law for blocking radio wave. The concert of the oldest orchestra in the world was dignified and worm.

Strong Dvorak, Stern Bruckner
[Metro – Young Jin Lee]

It was like the big bang that the beginning of the universe when LGO played the climax. Last 7th and 8th, LGO showed their might with maestro Ricardo Chailly and overwhelmed the audience. The sound of LGO was unique. It was rich and thick but not too heavy. The orchestra showed novel classiness as well as imposing sound. The trumpets and trombones were full of bright warmth. The sound of contrabass sounded strong and deeply with other string sections. The center of music, there was leadership of Ricardo Chailly who conduct the orchestra. On 7th, Dvorak’s Carnival Overture was heroic and brisk. In Dvorak’s Violin Concerto, Leonidas Kavakos showed intelligent interpretation. His performance was stern and beautiful with his passion and perfect technique. On 8th, in Bruckner’s 8th symphony, Chailly’s conducting was very clear and outstanding. He made this piece sound three-dimensional and showed dramatic development. In last movement, Chailly and LGO direct their energy on it. It was Bruckner’s victory. It was stern march of angels to battle field and statement of the creation.

“Taschenkonzert” in der Deutschen Schule

Dienstag, 8.
